What computers/devices are compatible?
Windows Version
- computers: Windows 8, 7, Vista, and XP (with Service Pack 3). Please note that some Windows XP computers may not have a good enough processor to run this software properly, and that Microsoft intends to stop supporting Windows XP in spring 2014.
- devices: should be compatible for transfer to most ereaders (Nook, Sony, Kobo). See the 3M for Computers page for a list of devices that have been tested and confirmed by Kansans.
- KINDLE -- not compatible. Amazon must allow compatibility for their devices before a lending library can begin work on this. If you would like to be on a notification list if this changes, email audiobooks@library.ks.gov.
Mac Version
- computers: any with OS X. Please note that the Mac version of the software functions nearly identically to the Windows version, so there is only one instructions page for use.
- devices: should be compatible for transfer to most ereaders (Nook, Sony, Kobo). See the 3M for Computers page for a list of devices that have been tested and confirmed by Kansans.
Apple Mobile App
- iOS 3.2 and higher iPod Touch, iPad, iPhone.
Android Mobile App
-
smartphones and tablets that can access the Google Play Store (formerly called Android Market). If your Android device cannot interact with the full Google Play Store, you will be unable to download the app. This includes the Pandigital Nova and the Kindle Fire. These devices will need to have books loaded to them from the computer. Click here for a help note on this.
- Nook Color, Tablet, and HD/HD+ -- must download app from the Barnes & Noble app store.
In Development: Windows RT App
As of January 2013, 3M affirms that an app compatible with Windows RT (the operating system for Surface Tablets and Windows smartphones) is in development. However, they are not far enough along to speculate on a release date yet. We hare started a notification list for when this is complete. Email us at audiobooks@library.ks.gov to request notification. Please realize that Windows RT devices should be able to load books from the computer to the device in the meantime. See this help note on how to do this.

How do I use this service if my device is not compatible?
If you have an Android-based tablet that is not compatible, see this help note. This should also work for Windows RT smartphones and Surface Tablets.
If you have a regular ereader and the 3M software will not recognize it for transfer, try to transfer a book manually.

How do I find a book to check out right now?
On your 3M software or mobile app:
- Click on the "Categories" tab.
- Look for a "Filter" or "Advanced Filter" button (top, right), click this.
- Select "Books available to check out."
This will filter out any book that is not available to be checked out right now. You may browse the categories from here. Some categories are huge--like fiction--and will have sub-categories to make browsing easier.

Can I return a book early?
Yes. Here's a direct link to the notes on how to do this for each version of the software/app. Choose how you use 3M:
Return to 3M Cloud Library Help Index
Do books expire on my ereader?
Yes. Each book file is transferred with a "due date" attached. The book should not work on your device past the due date. In our tests, the time seems to be down almost to the hour, 14 days after checkout on your 3M software (not 14 days from time of transfer).
Expired book files do not delete from your player automatically. If you need to learn how to delete a book from your device, click here.
Return to 3M Cloud Library Help Index.
How do I know that it is my turn for a hold?
3M can email you, but you must give the system your email address. See the appropriate notes on how to do this:
- Computer Users & Android app - through current website access. This has not been added to these versions of the software yet (in process).
- Apple Mobile App - this has been added to inside the app.
You have 72 hours to check out a hold once it becomes available to you. Please remember that the number of days listed for your hold is an estimate based on the number of copies the library has and the maximum checkout of 14 days. If the people ahead of you in line return the book early, the list will move faster!

I do not see my favorite author's newest book, and she/he is a bestseller, why?
Publishers are still trying to decide how they feel about libraries purchasing digital copies of their books. Some are not selling to libraries at all, others are being very choosy about which lending library company they will deal with, and still others only sell to libraries with heavy restrictions (extremely high prices, books that are actually "leased" and expire after a certain number of checkouts). We are highlighting this on our Big 6 Facebook page.
If you do not feel like the above applies to the book you are seeking, please use our Digital Books Request Form.

Kindle Owners Message
Please realize that Kindles are more locked down than other ereaders, and no lending library can create compatibility until Amazon allows it. So far this is not the case for 3M Cloud Library. If you would like to let Amazon know that as a Kansas resident you would like to be able to use 3M Cloud Library with your Kindle, please go to your Kindle Support page at Amazon and give them feedback.
Kindle Fire owners--you may wish to try the method that works for Android tablets to get books transferred via the computer. Here is the note on this. Freading eBooks are compatible with Kindle Fires, you may wish to try them instead.
The State Library is keeping a list of Kindle owners interested in library ebooks. We will notify you when we have any news on compatibility for Kindles. Email us at audiobooks@library.ks.gov

GENERAL OR ALL DEVICES HELP
I do not remember how to log in.
Your login information is:
Library ID or Username: your Kansas Library Card number
Library PIN or Password: your birthdate in MMDDYYYY format. So, if your birthdate was October 4, 1980, you would enter 10041980.
At this time, different versions of the app have used different wording on the login fields--we have requested that this be steamlined.
If you think that your library card may have expired, please contact your local library or email audiobooks@library.ks.gov with your card number and birthdate so we can assist you.

Trying to log in to the 3M Browsing website--keep getting a message that my login is wrong.
Your login information is:
Library ID: your Kansas Library Card number
Library PIN/Password: your birthdate in MMDDYYYY format. The website is sometimes picky about punctuation--do not enter slashes!
If you know that your card is not expired and that you have entered the login information correctly, we recommend clearing your temporary internet files/browser cache. This is the cause of most non-typo login errors. Clear Temporary Internet Files page for multiple internet browsers.

How do I know if I missed an update to my software or app?
The 3M Cloud Library software should notifify you when updates are necessary, but if your software has stopped working properly it is worth looking into.
Visit 3M Cloud Library's Apps page. On the left, you will see a button for every version of the software--click the one that applies to you. You can check the version number of your app against what this website says is the most current.

Error message: I have passed my Adobe ID limit of 6.
Adobe only allows you to use your Adobe ID on a total of 6 devices--this means computers, eReaders, smartphones, tablets. If you have reached your limit of 6, we can request that that your limit be reset to zero.
Email us your name and Kansas Library Card number for assistance: audiobooks@library.ks.gov.
Librarians, Teachers: if you train others to use the 3M Cloud Library as part of your job, it is best to keep your training/testing account at work separate from your personal, at home account. Usually this will keep you from running up against the Adobe limit of 6, and will keep you from messing up your personal account while testing.

My app is frozen, blank, or glitching.
Apple:
Restart the app, close down other apps:
- Double-tap the home key of your device.
- This should bring up a row of apps across the bottom that are currently running on the device. Each should have a red minus sign -- use the minus sign to force close the 3M Cloud Library app and any other app that you are not currently using (frees up processing power).
- Tap the home key to exit this mode.
- Restart your device (hold down the power button, power off then restart).
- Reopen your 3M Cloud Library app.
Uninstall:
If the above does not solve the issue, the best thing to do is uninstall the app and reinstall. Your checkouts, etc, are stored on the 3M server and will not be lost.
- Hold down on the 3M Cloud Library app until it begins to "wiggle."
- A black X button should have appeared on the upper left corner of the app. Tap this to delete the app.
- Tap your home key to exit deletion mode.
- Reinstall the 3M Cloud Library from your app store.
Android
Clear your application cache & force stop:
- From your home screen, access your "Settings." Note: on my older Droid phone, this is done by clicking the icon that looks like a list of lines, then choosing settings from the menu.
- Select "Applications" then "Manage Applications" (some versions of Android will skip Applications).
- Now choose the "3M Cloud Library" from the list of installed apps.
- Tap "Force Stop" then "Clear Cache."
- Return to your home screen. Access the 3M Cloud Library and see if this has solved the problem. If not, restart your device.
Uninstall:
If the above does not work, we recommend uninstalling the app and reinstalling it. The uninstall button for the app is on the same screen as the Clear Cache and Force Close options. Reinstall from your Google Play store.

Left the connection zone (wifi, 3/4G) and cannot access my book.
In order for your book to be readable outside the connection zone, you should always ensure that the book's file has fully downloaded to the device. All you need to do is open the book once before leaving the connection zone. Outside of the connection zone, the app will give you a message that it cannot connect to the servers, but downloaded books will open properly.

Apple Error: text size does not meet my visual needs.
The text size options on the 3M Apple App do not allow for a large enough text yet to accommodate users with low vision. 3M understands that this is an issue and you can expect changes in the future. In the meantime, you can use this way to read on your iPad if the 3M Apple App does not meet your text size requirements. It involves transferring the books from your computer to the iPad, and opening them in a reading app that has more text size options.
We have used Bluefire Reader for this--if you are already have an app you like that allows you to read EPUB format books and uses Adobe IDs for security it will also work.
Create an Adobe ID
To set everything up properly, you need an Adobe ID. If you do not have one (or have one but have forgotten your password) visit the Adobe Membership page to create an Adobe ID (or retrieve your login information with Forgot Password?). Your email address will be used as the Adobe ID, and you will create a password.
Setup on the iPad
- If you have it installed, delete the 3M Cloud Library app from the iPad, to make sure it does not interfere.
If you are unfamiliar with how to delete an app from the iPad, here are the instructions. - Install the free "Bluefire Reader" app on the iPad, using your App Store.
Still learning to install apps? Here's an example on all of the steps to install an app. - Open the Bluefire Reader on your iPad. Go past the welcome screen to the "Library."
- Select the "Info" button (bottom, right).
- At the top of the page should be a section about Adobe eBooks authorization. Tap the "Authorize" button. A box will pop up--enter your Adobe ID and password.
Setup on the Windows Computer
- Download and install the 3M Cloud Library software for PC. See our 3M Computer Access page for the download link under "Getting Started." This page has notes on using the software overall.
- Open the 3M Cloud Library for PC and log in.
- Check out a book. The first time you download/open a book, it will want to know what Adobe ID to use. (screenshots of this will be on the instructions page above, under "Read a Book") Select the option to input your personal Adobe ID, and then continue.
Transfer to the iPad
Short Video: http://www.screencast.com/t/QGQis5yHBd
- Plug your iPad into the computer.
- When iTunes comes up, click on the name of your iPad.
- Click on "Apps" in the navigation bar above the iPad's summary area.
- Scroll down (past Sync Apps section) to the "File Sharing" section.
- Click on your Bluefire Reader app in the list. This should pull up a list of all documents/books in the Bluefire app.
- Click "Add" below the list of files.
- The Add dialog box comes up.
a. Browse to find "Documents" or "My Documents" folder on your computer.
b. Select the folder "My Digital Editions" (this is where the 3M software stores the book files).
c. Select the EPUB file with title of your book from inside this folder. Click Open, if necessary, to finalize selection. - You should now be back at the iTunes window, and the title of the book should be in the list of files for the Bluefire Reader.
- Eject the iPad from iTunes.
To Read the Book on the iPad
- Open your Bluefire Reader
- Go to the "Library" and select the book from the list.
- When the book opens, tap the middle of the screen. This will bring up a menu at the bottom of the screen. Settings is the button on the right--tap this to select text size, margins, etc.
The Bluefire Reader will have a "User Guide" automatically downloaded in the Library. It contains a section called "Managing your eBooks" that is very helpful in learning how to set your options, delete books when finished, etc.

Digital Rights Management (DRM) or Adobe ID authorization problem.
If your new tablet or phone came with a reading app already installed, or you use more than one reading app based on Adobe technology, you may get an error message related to DRM (digital rights management) when you attempt to use the 3M Cloud Library app. You do not have to delete the alternate reading app.
Apple Device users--if you do not have an alternate reading app and get this error, please just uninstall/reinstall the 3M app. This sometimes happens after your device has received an update, or did not install properly.
If you have an alternate reading app, try this:
- Open the alternate reading app.
- You may be prompted to authenticate the reading app with an Adobe ID. If not, look under the app's settings for this option.
- Input your Adobe ID - this will give your entire device Adobe authentication. Need an Adobe ID? Get one here.
- Finally, make sure the 3M app cannot retain old information by:
- Android: Clear the 3M Cloud Library's app data before opening the app again.
- Go to Settings, then select "Manage Applications" or just "Applications."
- Find the 3M app in the list and select it.
- Tap the "Clear app data" button.
- Apple: the best way is to uninstall the app, then reinstall. Apple devices do not usually allow you to clear caches for apps.
- Tap and hold down on the 3M app until it begins to "wiggle."
- Tap the X button on the app. Confirm that you want to remove the app.
- Reinstall the 3M app from the App Store.
- Android: Clear the 3M Cloud Library's app data before opening the app again.

My device cannot access the app or app installation continually fails, how can I still use the books?
If your tablet will not work with the mobile app, you may be able to transfer an ebook from your computer to the tablet. This solution involves downloading a free reading app to your device, then transferring the book from your computer using the 3M Cloud Library software. Other free reading apps may also work, but the ones below are verified by Kansas librarians and ebook users.
Set up on the Device
Download a free reading app on your device. Options:
Android Devices
- Freading Reader
--used by our other ebooks system, this is also a standard EPUB reader. You will need to authenticate your Freading Reader with the same Adobe ID you are creating below for the computer. - BlueFire Reader
--also compatible with Freading as an alternate app. BlueFire must also be authenticated with an Adobe ID. - Nook Reader
Kindle Fire
- Aldiko Reader--use the same process as downloading the Freading app shown here, but search for "Aldiko" instead.
-- this is a standard EPUB reader. You will need to authenticate this app with the same Adobe ID you are creating below for the computer.
Windows RT Devices
- Nook Reader: Nook in the Windows App Store
Set Up on the Computer
- Make sure Adobe Digital Editions is installed. Do not have it? Get Adobe Digital Editions here.
- Authenticate Adobe Digital Editions with your personal Adobe ID. Get an Adobe ID here if you do not have one.
- Download the 3M Cloud Library software--this is under "Getting Started" on our this 3M Cloud Library Tutorial page. Learn to use the computer app and check out a book. NOTE: as you have authenticated your computer with the Adobe ID first, 3M Cloud should use this ID as well. If you did these steps out of order and have messed up your Adobe ID authentications, here are the instructions for changing Adobe ID.
Transfer to Device-Two Methods
Using 3M Software
- Once setup is complete, connect your device to the computer. You may need to tell your tablet to connect to the computer in USB mode by swiping from the top of the screen and selecting the connection.
- Transfer to the device using the 3M Cloud Library software on your computer (green transfer button on the cover of each book). These instructions are also on the tutorial page mentioned above.
- Safely eject the device from the computer.
- Use the reader app to open the book. Depending on the reader and your device, the book may automatically show in the app's list of books, or you may need to open it from storage.
Drag & Drop Between Folders
- In your 3M software, open each book once (by clicking the cover) to ensure it is fully downloaded to the computer.
- On the computer, navigate to this folder--it is where 3M has stored the downloaded ebooks:
Start->Documents->My Digital Editions - Connect your device to the computer.
- Pull up the device's storage. You should look in the storage for an appropriate place to put the ebooks, and open that folder. The best option is always the "Digital Editions" folder if you have one. Another good choice could be "Media."
- Drag & drop or copy & paste the ebooks files (listed as "title of book.epub") from the computer "My Digital Editions" folder to the selected folder on your device.
- Eject the device from the computer.
- Use the reader app to open the book. Depending on the reader and your device, the book may automatically show in the app's list of books, or you may need to open it from storage.
Kindle Fire users: in the Aldiko app, you may need to select Home->SD Card->Digital Editions (or name of folder you used on device) to open the ebooks properly.

ON THE COMPUTER (PC APP)
Software suddenly will not open, work properly, or gives error "unable to open 3MCloudLibrary.exe."
Usually you just need to clear the 3M cache in Windows. Here's how.
Cache Folder--If you have Windows 7 or Windows Vista:
- Go to the Start Menu
- In the Search programs and files box, enter exactly %appdata% and hit enter on your keyboard. It looked like this on my computer:

- This should pull up a list of folders. One will be for the 3M Cloud Library. Delete this folder-this is just where the 3M software saves information. If it had saved some "bad" information, where it was looking to connect in the wrong way, we've deleted that.
- Once this is done, close the window you have open, and try reopening 3M Cloud Library. You should have to log in.
Cache Folder--If you have Windows XP:
- Go to Start.
- Click on "Run."
- This should pull up a small box with a search field. Type exactly %appdata% and hit enter.
You should have to log in, but it should connect again.
If this does not work. the best course of action is to uninstall and reinstall the software.
Windows Uninstall Instructions:
- Go to your Start Menu.
- Select the Control Panel.
- Find "Programs"
- Select "Uninstall a Program." The list that comes up may take a minute to pull up. (Windows XP users--this may be called "Add or Remove Programs")
- Find "3M Cloud Library" in the list. Click on it once.
- Click "Uninstall" or "Remove" (depending on your version of Windows, this could be above the list of programs, or a part of the program's information line).
- Follow any prompts your computer gives you to uninstall the program.
- Delete the cache folder again, as above.

My eReader is not recognized by the 3M software, how can I still use my ebook?
Occassionally an ereader has inbuilt software that ends up blocking 3M Cloud Library's transfer method. The newer Sony eReaders have this problem. So, here is a way to work around it. Note: this will not work for Kindles.
Please check these things before giving up on a regular 3M Cloud Library transfer:
- device is turned on before connecting it to the computer.
- plugging your device's cord into a different USB port than usual--these do wear out a bit over time.
- device is fully updated - a missed update to your device's software would cause it to not perform properly.
Transfer to the Device
- Connect your device to the computer.
- In the 3M software choose the "My Books" tab and open the book you wish to transfer. This makes sure that the book is downloaded to your computer, and the adobe authentication is applied to it.
- On your computer, pull up "Documents->My Digital Editions." Any epub book downloaded on your computer should be stored here.
- Move the epub file into the proper folder for ebooks on your reader. (On a Sony there is an ebooks folder under "Media".)
- Eject your device from the computer.

Adobe ID & Authorization Problems
3M Cloud Library uses Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) technology as a base. ADE needs an Adobe ID to work properly, and it requires that the Adobe ID used be the same on your 3M Cloud Library, your ereader, and other Adobe software installed on your computer. Here is how to change an Adobe ID. If it seems that ALL parts of the system (ADE, 3M Cloud Library, the device) have a different Adobe ID, we recommend you change the Adobe IDs in the order given below.
Need to create a new Adobe ID to apply across all of your software and devices? Get one here.
Adobe Digital Editions (if you have the program on your computer)
1. Open ADE
2. Keyboard: CTRL + SHIFT + D
3. Popup should allow you to deauthorize.
4. The software may close. When you reopen it, the ADE setup wizard should now ask you to authorize the computer. Put in the new adobe ID & password.
Other Adobe Software
Do you have Adobe Illustrator or another piece of Adobe software that is using an old Adobe ID? How to remove / update an Adobe ID varies. See the Adobe Support page and select the product to look for a solution. Note: this does not apply to your Adobe Reader. If you do not have a paid version of Adobe Acrobat you do not have to worry about Adobe Reader having an Adobe ID.
3M Cloud Library
For Windows 7 or Vista:
1. Go to the Start menu.
2. Search %appdata%
3. This should pull up a list of folders. Delete the 3M Cloud Library folder (basically just its cache, it is also where it stores an Adobe ID for DRM purposes).
4. The next time you check out a book in the app and open it, 3M will use whatever Adobe ID your Adobe Digital Editions is authorized with. If you do not have ADE, it will ask if you wish to use the system-generated ID or to enter your own.
For Windows XP:
1. Go to the Start menu.
2. Click on "My Computer."
3. Choose the C drive.
4. Select Documents and Settings.
5. Go into the User folder or folder named with the Username for the computer.
6. Choose the Application Data folder (this may be hidden--if you can't find it go up the Tools Menu. Select: Folder Options->View->Show hidden files and folders.)
7. Find the 3M Cloud Library folder. Delete this (basically just its cache, it is also where it stores an Adobe ID for DRM purposes).
8. The next time you check out a book in the app and open it, 3M will use whatever Adobe ID your Adobe Digital Editions is authorized with. If you do not have ADE, it will ask if you wish to use the system-generated ID or to enter your own.
Update Adobe Authorization on an eReader:
1. Make sure your Adobe Digital Editions is open, and already authorized with the ID you wish to use on the device.
2. Plug in the device to the computer.
3. Once ADE "sees" the device, it will want to change the device authorization to the one it is using. Allow this.
If ADE does not automatically want to change the device authorization, but you know it is incorrect, keyboard: CTRL + SHIFT + E. This will instigate the deauthorization of the device.
Error: "unable to download to device" (usually new ereader)
This is the error where 3M Cloud Library can connect to the device, and shows the green "download to device" buttons for the ebooks, but then gives the simple error message of "unable to download to device."
3M Cloud Library uses Adobe technology as a base. If your eReader (like a Nook) is new, it may never have encountered an Adobe ID before, and it is getting confused. Here is how to straighten this out:
1. If you have Adobe Digital Editions on your computer, open it and plug in the ereader. (Do not have ADE? Get it here. )
2. The ereader should show up under "Shelves" on the right side. If your Nook has not been connected to ADE before, it will want to authorize it now. Allow it to do this.
3. Reopen the 3M Cloud Library and retry the transfer.
ON THE DEVICE
I have transferred the book but can't find it on the ereader.
Different ereaders display transferred books from different folders. If your book is not obvious from the "Library" on your device, look for:
- search option for the library -- try entering part of the title of the book or the author name.
- a "documents" section, where you can click through all of the device's storage folders. If you do this, the book is most commonly found in a folder called "digital editions."
Return to 3M Cloud Library Help Index.
Device: how to delete a book from the eReader when finished.
While this will vary slightly by device, the general idea is the same.
Short Video: deleting a book from a Nook Color.
- Plug your eReader into the computer.
- When the AutoPlay dialog box comes up, choose "Open device to view files." If the AutoPlay box does not appear, go to Start-->My Computer, and click on the device.
- Click into the storage on your device, and into the folder on the device where the ebook is stored (on many devices this folder is called Digital Editions). Delete the file for the book.
Return to 3M Cloud Library Help Index.
Error: book says it cannot be opened/is expired.
When a book is transfered to the device, the 3M Cloud Library attachs a due date to the book. Once your checkout time has expired (total of 14 days from checkout) the book files will corrupt on the ereader, and you will no longer be able to open the book. If this is happening and the checkout time is not yet over, see below.
Book Just Checked Out/Transfered
- Open your 3M Cloud Library software.
- In the My Books tab, click on the book cover to open it inside the app. This makes sure that the book file downloaded properly.
- Re-transfer the book to your device.
