What is Tumblebooks?

Tumblebooks are ebooks with audio for kids.  Children can read along, or just have the book read to them.  All books play directly in your internet browser window, so there is no software or files to download to your computer. Additionally, Tumblebooks has been set up so that no login is required to access our account.

There are no limits to how many books or other materials you use on Tumblebooks.

Most materials will be for children elementary grades 2-3 and younger, though older children may enjoy access to classic stories like Anne of Green Gables or The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood.

Other options and materials:

  • Games (word searches, puzzles) for many books.
  • Videos, most commonly associated with non-fiction books.  Example: Meet the Meerkat has a short video provided by National Geographic.
  • Language Learning section contains picture books translated into other languages.  There are currently books in Spanish, French, Chinese, and Russian.
  • Playlist feature--add multiple titles to a playlist for uninterrupted storytime on your computer!

Can I download the book for later?

Most books play in the browser only.

A few of the longer Tumblebook Classics allow you to download the story to your computer.  Books with this option will have the "download" link below the book cover.  This is not recommended.  The downloaded version does not contain audio playback, the download process is difficult, and the ebook cannot be transferred to an ereader.

If you would just like to download classic ebooks for an older child, many  can be found at Project Gutenberg as free downloads.  These can be used on a computer, ereader, tablet, etc.

Do I need to register (and how do I do that)?

Registration is optional.  All books and other materials can be accessed without a login.

  2. Choose "Register" on this page.
  3. Fill out the registration information and click the green "Register" button.
  4. This has created your account and logged you in.  You may now use the "Add to Favorites" button to save books to your account.

To access your saved books in the future:

  1. Go back to "My Cloud."
  2. Click on "Login" and use your email address and password.

Computer Use Help

These are the two most common reasons for a Tumblebooks access problem.

Update Flash Player
Tumblebooks need Flash to run. Usually your internet browser will prompt you to update it if necessary, but if you accidentally closed the message or otherwise missed it:

  1. Go to the Install Flash Player site.  http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
  2. UNCHECK the promotional offer in the gray box.
  3. Download & install Flash as prompted by your computer.
  4. Close and reopen your internet browser before attempting to use the Tumblebook again.

Clear the Browser's Temporary Files or Cache
A lot of leftover "junk" can build up as you use the internet, and interfere with normal functions.  Since Tumblebooks play directly in your internet window, clearing out these files usually clears up an access problem.

Different browser types call these temporary files/cache different things in their menus.  See our "Clear Temporary Internet Files" page if you are not sure where to find this.

Also Consider:

  • When was the last time you restarted your computer?  We recommend restarting about once a week.  This helps your computer start fresh in a new usage session.
  • Have you kept up with your computer's required updates?  Missing updates often leads to a variety of problems, which will be compounded over time.

    Apple Mobile Device Help

Please make sure that the top banner of TumbleBooks says "for iPads and Mobile Devices."   The site is supposed to notice that you are on a mobile device, and take you to the mobile version of the site.  If it has not:

    1. Find the "Choose" drop down box on the right side of the site - it may have "English" in it as the default version for computer users.
    2. Switch this to "Mobile" and tap the "Go" button.  You will be sent to the mobile version.

If you are on the mobile version of the site, try:

    Clearing Safari Cache
This process will delete the temporary files accumulated by your browser through normal use.

    1. Go to the device's Home screen.
    2. Tap Settings.
    3. Choose Safari from the list.
    4. Tap "Clear Cache" option.

    Restart Your Device
Please realize that tablets & smartphones need restarted occassionally, just like a regular computer.  We recommend restarting once a week.  This allows your device to start a new usage session. Here's how to do this for your device:

    1. Hold down the power button on your device.
    2. When the "power off" slider pops up on screen, swipe this slider to confirm that you want to power off the device.
    3. Leave the device off for a minute or two.
    4. Press the power button to turn it back on.

Android Mobile Device & Color eReader Help

*Color eReaders are usually are running a version of Android modified by the company that made it.

      Restart the Device
Most access problems for Android devices can be cleared up by simply restarting the device!  We normally recommend restarting these types of devices once a week, as this allows the device to start a fresh usage session.  Here's how to do this:

      1. How down on the power button on your device.
      2. After a few seconds, a "powering down" message should appear.  Some Android devices require you to select "restart" from a pop up at this time.
      3. Allow the device to be off for a minute or two.
      4. Press the power button to turn it back on.

      Clearing Browser Cache
Most Android tablets allow you to clear the browser cache.  As Tumblebooks play directly in the browser, this is usually helpful if you encounter a problem.

      1. Go to "Settings."
      2. Choose "Apps."
      3. Pick your browser from the list (you likely use Chrome or Firefox, though it may just say "web").
      4. Tap the "clear cache" button.
