Was a traveling preacher for the Free Methodists, and was known to have performed at least one marriage ceremony for a Negro couple. According to his family records he built the first two-story log cabin west of the Mississippi River. Served in the Mexican War and fought in the Battle of Buena Vista. Twice married, first to Elizabeth Davidson in 1837, she died in 1851, he then married Elizabeth Herrinton in 1855.
