Home : Statewide Resource Sharing : Interlibrary Loan Development ProgramAdding your library's holdings to the KLCThe KLC (Kansas Library Catalog) is a computerized listing of holdings in 600 libraries across the state. It lists more than five million items. People use the KLC to identify the library that has the item(s) they need. The KLC allows libraries to effectively perform interlibrary loan. The KLC is available online on Blue Skyways (http://ksuc-agent.auto-graphics.com/agent/login.asp?cid=ksuc&lid=ksuc&mode=g). Materials purchased with Interlibrary Loan Development Program grant funds must be added to the KLC, using one of the options listed in this document. Entering ILDP purchases onto the KLC How do libraries enter their holdings onto the Kansas Library Catalog? Here is a listing of options available to you: Option 1: Working through your regional library system If you receive an ILDP grant, you're encouraged to work through your regional library system to have your grant purchases cataloged and entered onto the KLC. This is the preferred option in most parts of the state. To find out about obtaining this service, call your regional library system. Their number is listed below. Option 2: Obtaining an acquisitions tape or diskette from your vendor You may also obtain cataloging in the form of an acquisition tape from the jobber who sold you the materials. Here's how the process works for a popular vendor: Baker and Taylor. Baker and Taylor. First, you'll need to complete a B & T profile that outlines your needs. You can get more information about the profile from Baker and Taylor. Once your profile is completed, Baker and Taylor can save cataloging records for materials you order from them. Baker and Taylor charges a fee for saving these records. AutoGraphics, the database vendor for the KLC, can load these records into the Kansas Library Catalog. Then your holdings will show up on the KLC in a few weeks. Other vendors. Two vendors (Follett and EconoClad) automatically provide cataloging records at no charge for Kansas customers. These records are then loaded onto the KLC. Call either of these vendors for details. Before you buy acquisitions tapes or diskettes from your jobber, call your regional system consultant, and contact Rhonda Machlan at the State Library. Option 3: Entering ILDP acquisitions onto the KLC yourself Some libraries enter their holdings onto the KLC, using one of the alternatives listed below. Whichever option you choose, you'll need to arrange for entering your ILDP purchases onto the KLC before submitting your proposal. You can't receive a grant unless you make these arrangements beforehand. OCLC. Libraries all over the world use OCLC, an online cataloging system. About 40 Kansas libraries are OCLC subscribers. The Kansas Library Catalog is based on OCLC records, so items Kansas libraries enter on OCLC also appear on the KLC. BiblioFile. This system allows libraries to search for shelf list items in a multi-million title list on CD-ROM discs. The success rate for matching local items against the BiblioFile database is high. Once matched, the catalog record is modified with local information such as call number. BiblioFile compiles this cataloging activity on diskette and sends it to AutoGraphics, the firm that produces the KLC. BiblioFile is best suited for adding titles that are already in your collection to the KLC. Contact Rhonda Machlan for more. SharePac Catalog Maintenance Module. This specialized version of the CD-ROM KLC software allows libraries to add their holding symbol and call numbers to items already on the KLC. While CMM's "hit rate" is not as high as that of BiblioFile, it is acceptable. These matches are saved to a disk and sent to the State Library, which performs quality control checks and forwards the transactions to AutoGraphics. Contact Rhonda Machlan for cost information. Option 4: Using local OPAC records Online public access catalogs and circulation systems such as Winnebago and Follett CircPlus can export cataloging records entered locally. These records can then be entered onto the KLC. Call your vendor for instructions on how to do this. Here's who to contact for information To learn about obtaining KLC data entry service from your library system, contact the consultant listed below for your region: Central Kansas Library System (Great Bend) North Central Kansas Library System (Manhattan) Northeast Kansas Library System (Lawrence) Northwest Kansas Library System (Norton) Southeast Kansas Library System (Iola) South Central Kansas Library System (Hutchinson) Southwest Kansas Library System (Dodge City) For more about entering your library's holdings onto the KLC, contact Rhonda Machlan at the State Library ((800) 432-3919 or (785) 296-5110).
